How to Change your Stinking Attitude

According to www.verywellmind.com an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular object, person, thing, or event. Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing, and they can have a powerful influence over behavior. While attitudes are enduring, they can also change.

Sounds like a mouthful, but all of it true. John N. Mitchell said it best when he said that, “Our attitude toward life determines life’s attitude towards us.”

I am glad to hear that whilst attitudes are enduring, they can also change. Isn't that a sigh of relief for those with stinking attitudes? Just as anyone dislikes having to tell another person that their odour smells unpleasant, it is the same to tell a person about their stinking attitude. It is difficult for us to say and for the person with the attitude in question to hear. However, we know not all negative attitudes are the fault of the recipient, so we who know better must adorn ourselves with a humble attitude and help our neighbour to see the light.

Here are 5 ways we can help each other to improve our stinking attitudes:

  • Identify and Understand what You want to Change.

The first step towards change is clearly understanding what needs to be changed. We will need to carry out an honest and in-depth self-evaluation so we can point out exactly which of our traits need to be improved or totally changed. Can you be totally honest with yourself? If you can then this is a great step forward towards improvement.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How did I become so negative?

  2. When did I start developing this attitude?

  3. Did anyone else notice,?

  • Choose a Role Model.

Find someone who has the kind of attitude that you want to have, and let his or her life give you inspiration and encouragement to move beyond your temporary failures in your journey towards becoming a better person. Personally, my role model is Jesus Christ, He is a perfect standard to emulate and my daily guide is the bible. However, there are people that have awesome characters that you may aspire to as well. Having the right role model is important as there are different types out there. There is no one person on earth in whom you will find perfection.

  • Think about how your Attitude Change will Affect your Life

Now that you are on your path to change, you must be realistic about the journey of change. It is not going to be easy, remember attitudes are usually ingrained into the psyche and emerge without conscious thought. You will need to figure out exactly what this change could bring to your life. Will changing your attitude mean a happier family or social life? Will a change in your attitude mean a more successful career or business? Fix your mind on the things that would come as a result of your attitude change and you will have a greater chance of reaching your goal.

  • Choose the Right Company

When making a change you need people and an environment to support and champion that change. You cannot expect to be able to change if you go on surrounding yourself with people who possess all the negative traits that you want to change. Make sure you network with people who are positive, optimistic and are full spectrum thinkers. You will be more easily rewarded for your effort if you stay within this network of people.

  • Believe that you are able to change.

Although this may be last numerically in this post, it really isn't in the process of change but happens simultaneously with every every effort you make to change your attitude. Whether you need to self talk, exercise, scream to the top of your lungs you will need to trust and believe that you can achieve this change. If you don’t believe in yourself or believe that you or your life can change, it just won’t happen—you will either never start, or give up quickly so you won’t have even given yourself the opportunity to succeed.

I hope this can help you begin your process of changing your negative attitude to a more positive outlook.
